The idea of a Santa Pub Crawl is not unique to Tampa. In fact, Santa Pub Crawls have been around for many years. In 2001, members of one of the Tampa Krewes got together with the idea of making life better for those less fortunate than themselves. They wanted to create an event that was fun for all, but would also raise money for local charities.
They decided on the second Friday of every December, they would gather their friends together in their Christmas finest to raise money and gather toyys for charity. The Tampa version of the Santa Pub Crawl was born. Tampa Charities, Inc, throws the event.
Unlike Other Santa Pub Crawls, the Tampa version requires everyone to dress from head to toe in a holiday-related costume. The participants also know only the first bar they will be going to. At that location, they donate thie new, unwrapped toys for distribution to needy families and they make donations that will go to Meals On Wheels to provide food to those who would otherwise go hungry. From there, they would follow the "Sleigh Dirvers" on an odessey from pub to pub.
To date, the Santa Pub Crawl has gathered thousands of dollars for donation to Meals on Wheels and nearly 2000 toys for underprivileged children in the Bay Area.
